At DesignYard, we have always been drawn to jewellery that goes beyond ornament — pieces that hold story, symbolism, and emotional depth alongside exceptional craftsmanship. Few contemporary Irish jewellers embody this approach as completely as Sam Lafford.

For our latest Featured Maker presentation, Sam introduces a new body of work that continues his exploration of meaning through form, architecture, and material. These collections speak about guidance, resilience, generosity, strength, memory, and the people who shape us. Lanterns become symbols of direction. Pearls become metaphors for endurance and softness. Hands become reminders of support and human connection.

Presented in platinum and 18 karat gold, set with diamonds, rubies, sapphires, tourmalines, and luminous natural pearls, these new works continue Sam’s distinctive ability to create jewellery that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Jewellery as a Compass: The Meaning Behind Quattro

In an increasingly noisy world, Quattro was created as a reminder to reconnect with purpose. Named after the four cardinal points of a compass, the collection reflects the idea of direction — not simply where we are going, but why we are going there. The pieces become quiet talismans for moments when life feels scattered or uncertain.

Rather than overt symbolism, Sam approaches the idea through clarity of form. The geometry is deliberate and balanced, creating jewellery that feels calm, centred, and intentional. These are pieces designed to move through daily life with the wearer — subtle reminders to recalibrate, refocus, and return to what matters.

Quattro is handcrafted in platinum and 18 karat gold with diamonds, available as studs, earrings, pendants, and bracelets.

The collection reflects one of the defining qualities of Sam Lafford’s work: jewellery that carries emotional meaning without sacrificing elegance or wearability.

Grace: Light Reflected Back

The Grace collection explores a quieter kind of strength.

For Sam, grace is not passive. It is the choice to remain generous, kind, and open-hearted even during difficult moments. The collection began as a reflection on how people move through the world with dignity and warmth — and how those qualities shape not only others, but ourselves.

The jewellery itself embodies this idea through light.

Rose-cut sapphires are set so that illumination enters from above and reflects back through polished gold surfaces, creating an inner glow within each piece. The effect is subtle yet luminous, reinforcing the central idea of the collection: that what we give outwardly becomes part of our own light.

Grace features natural sapphires, rhodolite garnets, and tourmalines in 18 karat gold, presented as earrings, pendants, and rings.

Several Grace pieces are already part of the DesignYard collection, with additional new works arriving as part of this Featured Maker presentation.

Leading Lights: Lanterns for the Journey

Leading Lights continues one of Sam Lafford’s most recognisable and architecturally inspired collections.

Rooted in Dublin’s historic streetscape and the symbolic language of lanterns and path lights, the collection reflects the people who guide us through life — teachers, parents, mentors, friends, and even fleeting encounters that alter our direction.

Each piece takes the form of a lantern, handcrafted in platinum or 18 karat gold and set with diamonds or rubies.

A defining detail within the collection is the arrangement of eight french-cut diamonds: four facing outward and four turned inward. The symbolism is deeply considered. It speaks to both the self we present publicly and the quieter inner work that shapes who we become.

The collection becomes a meditation on guidance, legacy, and human connection — not only the people who illuminated our own path, but the ways we unknowingly become guiding lights for others.

New Leading Lights works presented at DesignYard include:

  • Asymmetrical platinum diamond earrings
  • Ruby earrings in 18 karat yellow gold
  • Diamond earrings in 18 karat yellow gold
  • A platinum diamond bracelet revisiting one of Sam’s earlier and highly celebrated designs

These pieces balance architectural precision with emotional resonance — a hallmark of Sam Lafford’s jewellery.

Sea Lights: Strength & Softness Held Together

Sea Lights extends the visual language of Leading Lights into a more organic and elemental world.

Inspired by navigation, open water, and the courage required to move toward the unknown, the collection centres around pearls held within lantern-like structures of platinum and gold.

The contrast is intentional.

Pearls — formed slowly in darkness and under pressure — sit within strong geometric frameworks. The dialogue between softness and structure becomes central to the collection’s meaning.

Sea Lights reflects the idea that vulnerability and resilience are not opposites. That warmth does not require weakness. That openness can coexist with strength.

The collection features an extraordinary range of natural pearls, each bringing its own atmosphere and character:

  • Steel blue Tahitian pearls in platinum
  • Golden South Sea pearls in 18 karat yellow gold
  • White South Sea pearls in 18 karat yellow gold
  • Pink freshwater pearls in platinum
  • Faceted pink freshwater pearls in platinum
  • Pistachio Tahitian pearls in 18 karat yellow gold
  • Baby Tahitian pearls in 18 karat yellow gold

Architectural yet fluid, Sea Lights captures the emotional depth that defines Sam’s work while introducing a softer, more luminous material language.

Helping Hand: Jewellery About Human Connection

The Helping Hand collection remains one of Sam Lafford’s most emotionally direct works.

Originally hand-carved in wax, every detail of the gesture was shaped by hand — the natural positioning, the openness of the palm, the sense of reassurance carried in the movement.

The result is not theatrical or symbolic in an obvious way. Instead, it feels intimate and deeply human.

Helping Hand speaks about support: the people who steadied us during difficult moments, and the moments we became that source of steadiness for someone else.

Cast in silver and suspended from a 9 karat gold chain, the collection reflects DesignYard’s long-held belief that jewellery can carry emotional meaning in ways words often cannot.

Existing Helping Hand works continue to form part of Sam Lafford’s presentation at DesignYard.

Contemporary Irish Jewellery with Emotional Depth

What makes Sam Lafford’s work so distinctive within contemporary Irish jewellery is the balance he achieves between narrative, craftsmanship, and wearability.

These collections are rich in symbolism, but never feel overly literal. The architectural precision of the settings, the carefully selected gemstones and pearls, and the sculptural forms ensure the jewellery remains elegant first — with meaning unfolding gradually through wear and experience.

Every piece reflects Sam’s wider philosophy that jewellery should become part of a person’s life story. Not simply something beautiful to wear, but something capable of carrying memory, identity, reassurance, and intention.

This latest Featured Maker presentation continues that vision beautifully.
