Behind the Craft at Niessing
For over 150 years, Niessing has been making, or better put, reinventing jewellery. Since 1873, everything, from design to making - happens under one roof in Vreden, Germany. What arrives as raw bars of gold and platinum leaves as pieces that feel impossibly light, beautifully balanced, and deceptively simple. Here you’ll find no mass production and no detail is left to chance. This is jewellery engineered with emotion.
It Starts With a Line on Paper
In Niessing’s design studio ideas begin as pencil lines. But they don’t stay abstract for long. Design and workshop work side by side to create 3-D sketches, prototypes and experiment until they reach the innovation required to realise the designs in precious metals. Designer Manfred Tenhumberg puts it simply:
“Tradition combined with innovation. That’s Niessing to me.”
And that tension between heritage and experimentation is where the magic happens.
The Bauhaus Thread
Niessing’s design philosophy has long been influenced by Bauhaus thinking: clean lines, clarity, reducing to the essential. But Niessing adds something softer to that rigour. They translate “form follows function” into something more human: form follows emotion. Their designs show no excessive flourishes, just pure form reduced to what matters. And somehow, that restraint makes the pieces feel even more powerful.
The Icon That Changed Everything
In 1979, Niessing introduced the Niessing Spannring: a diamond appearing to float, held in place only by the tension of the ring itself. The revolutionary design used no claws, no traditional setting, instead relying on precision engineering and absolute confidence in material strength of their proprietary alloys. Over four decades later, it remains one of the most recognisable designs in contemporary jewellery.
Handcraft Meets High-Tech
Every Niessing piece passes through many hands before it’s ready to wear. Niessing’s team comprises master goldsmiths, laser technology and microscopes, setters, and polishers — traditional skills collaborating with innovative practices to develop groundbreaking work.
For example their exceptional metal colours. For Niessing, “What is the colour of your love?” isn’t just a slogan, it’s a design question that demands an answer. Their response? The Iris, Aura, Solaris, and most recently the luminous anniversary alloy Supla Grenadine, a rosé gold with a heart of platinum.
The Makers Behind the Metal
What we love most about Niessing is that, for all its innovation, it still feels deeply human.
There are master goldsmiths who have spent decades refining their touch. Designers who think in decades, not seasons. Color specialists who experiment patiently until a hue feels alive.

Design for Decades
Niessing’s design is contemporary and designed to last - no chasing trends, yet utterly modern. That mindset extends beyond aesthetics: their precious metals are sourced responsibly and their diamonds come from controlled origins. Since 2021, Niessing has been a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council — a natural extension of a philosophy built on longevity and integrity.
