So what exactly is gold bullion?

Bullion is physical gold and silver of high purity that is often kept in the form of bars, ingots, or coins. Bullion can sometimes be considered legal tender, and is often held as reserves by central banks or held by institutional investors.

Bars and coins come in many denominations and measures of gold content (also called fineness). Fineness is either measured in carats (the highest being 24 carats) or in parts of gold per thousands (usually 995, 999, or 999.9 parts per thousand).

  • Modern bullion coins are commonly produced in denominations of 1/20, 1/10, ¼, ½, and one troy ounce (31.1grams). The coins contain a standard amount of precious metals and can be easily traded, through dealers, auctions and sometimes even used as cash.
  • Bars can be purchased in 1, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 1,000 gram denominations as well as 1, 10, and 100 troy ounces. Gold in the form of 1 oz bars is a sound investment for anyone looking to add precious metals to their collections or portfolio.

Why would I buy Bullion?

Gold offers about as much certainty as you can get. It is a safe, long term way to store wealth. Physical gold bullion - unlike some other investments - will always hold high value and it is not susceptible to inflation the way your cash savings can be (governments can’t print more gold after all).

Gold bullion tends to do particularly well when other investments such as stocks and property are under-performing. So it makes sense to include some gold bullion in your investment portfolio to offset other investments.

Importantly, as a highly precious metal, gold's worth is recognised internationally, and is considered a valuable luxury no matter where you are in the world. Presented in internationally accepted denominations and standardized gold content, your bars and coins are instantly recognizable and so easy to value and sell. An additional convenient, positive aspect is that gold bars and gold coins can be taken with you easily, wherever you go.

Where do I go to buy bullion?

There are many places you can buy gold bullion and we advocate doing your own research. Make sure you find out all costs and commissions when you are considering your vendor as they can vary quite a bit.

At Designyard we partner with local bullion vendors for our gold bullion investments. We like that our physical bullion is right here on our doorstep. Contact us with any questions, we're happy to help
