She's totally conquered your heart and you're getting ready to pop the big question - or maybe you already have and she said yes! Either way you are looking for the perfect ring for your love. Let us show you how to make it a memorable experience.

Origin and classic styles

The tradition of wearing a ring to demonstrate loyalty and fidelity dates back to ancient times. There's evidence that Roman brides wore engagement rings in the 2nd century BC. The notion of the engagement ring as we know it today stems from 1215, when Pope Innocent III declared a mandatory waiting period between betrothal and the actual wedding ceremony. Couples intending to marry exchanged rings to signify their commitment to each other during this waiting period - a tradition that remains popular today.

Historically engagement rings held coloured gemstones like sapphire, emerald and ruby. But with new diamond finds at the turn of the century diamonds became more readily available and the brilliant white diamond took centre stage. Diamond is the hardest wearing gem known on earth and as such is a fitting symbol of your enduring everlasting love.

Classic styles include the elegant diamond solitaire, the wider three stone ring like the trilogia pictured here, or the popular sparkly diamond halo ring. At DesignYard we like to push the boundaries of convention and offer a wide range of contemporary engagement rings that are just that bit different - think of Cardillac who create wonderfully flowing rings where the design is more important than the gem.
